If you follow us on social media you will have been aware of our huge rescue mission on the Isle of Barra back in March (if you missed this, you can catch up here.) No sooner had we rehomed the last cat from that particular undertaking and WISCK were contacted by concerned members of the public in South Uist about a dire situation involving a colony of wild-living cats who were clearly unwell and in urgent need of veterinary care.
The kittens were found in horrific condition, eyes glued shut with infection, riddled with fleas and worms. All are underweight and suffering from cat flu. Having got them vet checked thankfully we’re pretty confident that with intensive eye drop treatment, most of their eyes can be saved.
One little guy has to lose his eye (little black face) as his eye is too ulcerated to save, we’re currently getting him as healthy as we possibly can and ensuring he gains some much-needed weight before he goes under anesthetic to give him the best possible chance of surviving such a major operation.
Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the support from our community, these cats are now receiving the necessary veterinary care, food, and shelter. Our friends at Uist Cat Rescue are helping us with the continuation of trapping and transporting them safely up to us in Stornoway.
The adults were also in a poor way; most have hair loss due to flea allergies and poor nutrition. All are severely underweight, as seen in the photos when they arrived in care, (climbing the door). You’ll also notice the black cat was extremely pregnant when she arrived. She gave birth the next morning to three tiny kittens. Thank goodness she waited till she got to cat central as now she and her babies are clean and cosy and she’s offered as much food as she can eat!
As you can imagine, this is hugely expensive work and our vet bills for one month are eye-watering. July alone was over £2000. Which is why we need your help, we are funded purely through donations and fundraising efforts. When we say every little helps, we really mean it. All the usual ways to donate are shown below.
Thank you SO much for your on-going support, the cats & kittens are so very, very grateful.
